How to return to "normal mode" from "safe mode" in windows xp professional?

I changed the setting by running %26quot;MSCONFIG%26quot; file (BOOT.INI - marked %26quot;safe mode%26quot;) to run the system in safe mode so that I can scan my laptop for viruses.

It started in SAFE MODE but is not accepting the password to log on to windows (I am sure the password is correct). Now that I want to change back to NORMAL MODE log on, it doesn't works. I pressed F8 key to run the NORMAL MODE but it always goes in SAFE MODE. I cant make changes in MSCONFIG file since I am not able to log on to syste.

Please help... how I can change back to NORMAL MODE?

I tried to press ALT+CTRL+DEL, while being in safe mode log on... but it does not work.

Might be something disabled for higher security.

How to return to %26quot;normal mode%26quot; from %26quot;safe mode%26quot; in windows xp professional?
The only difference between safe mode and normal mode is which drivers are loaded - nothing to do with security. Start in safe mode, log in as Administrator (no password), and run msconfig. If you can't, you need more help than you can get here - bring the computer to someone who can boot from a Linux CD and reset your boot files.

DELL laptop m140 desktop flashing on off then totally off?
I can tell you that the Acer has nothing to do with whats happening to the Dell. Maybe computer is over heating or to many items plug into the same outlet. if those 2 are not it then you got a hardware problem.

Certain changes in my Earlier Question. Please help?

Computer problem....Please help?

I use Windows XP Professional. So, I have basically two problems.

Problem1:

Whenever I switch on my computer it says %26quot;Invalid file boot.ini Loading from C:\Windows\%26quot; and then the Windows start booting.

Problem 2:

I used Nero 7. I uninstalled it. I wanted to install Nero 8 but it said that some cab file is corrupt and it rolled back all the actions performed.

Then I tried installing the Nero 7 back and it says the same thing and rolled back every action.

What is the matter with my computer?? How to eradicate these problems???

I don't have any System32 file in my C:\Program files\Windows\

I forgot to mention that a new file is created named User Images.bmp containing funny emoticons.

Many of my files of any extension (nothing in particular) are blue in color. Why is that??

I use avira as my antivirus

Certain changes in my Earlier Question. Please help?
To fix the boot.ini problem, open 'Notepad' (Start%26gt;all Programs%26gt;Accessories) copy the following and paste it into notepad, save as 'newboot'

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti鈥?br>
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI鈥?Windows XP Professional%26quot; /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Click Start right click My Computer choose Properties%26gt;Advanced tab.

Under startup and Recovery click Settings then Edit. Replace the boot.ini (highlight all and press backspace) with the one saved in Notepad as 'newboot', click Ok%26gt;Apply%26gt;OK restart.

Download, install, update and run full scans, in safe mode*, with these programs...

http://www.malwarebytes.org

http://www.superantispyware.com

Then re-start.

If you still can't run a scan, go into the scanner's folder and re-name the .exe file to 'MyFile.exe' and try in safe mode again. Some malware prevent the execution of anti spy/mal/virus scans by blocking them by name.

You should consider getting rid of norton for a good Anti-Virus program.

Try one of these free ones...

http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html

http://free.avg.com/download

*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 then use arrow keys to highlight 'Safe Mode' click on a user account, enter the password (if you don't know it, there probably isn't one so leave it blank) and hit enter/return.

My system files are on the wrong volume...?

I had 2 partitions, c: and d:, c=windows and programs d=files, backup, etc..

i formatted c: and reinstalled windows XP, then windows installed

/windows

/program files

/documents and settings

etc..

inside C:

BUT!! it installed all the root system files (ntldr, boot.ini, command.com, ntdetect.com etc.) and some others on D: !!

but i want my D: shared, and organized and Neet.

How can i change their call path to be able to move them to C:

thx a lot !
My system files are on the wrong volume...?
If your computer boots up from disk C: then all is well. No problem. The system files may be on C and hidden.

If the computer does not boot from C: as it should go to drive D at the command prompt. When you get to D:%26gt; type:

sys C:

this will put the system on drive C:
My system files are on the wrong volume...?
Windows, AV and firewall are all that need to be on C drive, the rest on the other partition, which means you have to manually pick the drive to where if goes otherwise it will by default put it on c drive?

  • How can I redownload Windows XP on my computer if I acidentally deleted it? (PLEASE HELP!!!) (involves Linux)?

    please read this cause I'm desperate to get Windows XP (Home Edition) back. read this whole thing if you can but the main question is in the last paragraph. I've had a Sony Vaio home computer for over 3 years now and it originally had Windows XP installed on it and my dad said something about the computer first asking him if he wanted to make a Recovery Disk cause it didn't come with a Windows Startup disk or a Recovery disk. well he did make it and the computer burned the files onto a DVD+R disk but that disk never helped fix Windows XP.

    there was one day when my brother accidentally pressed the power button on the side of the computer instead of shutting the computer down. that happened many times before and nothing happened but after that time, whenever I started the computer back up, this message would always come up when my computer started up (below, and my question continues after the message so please keep reading!)

    We aplogize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

    If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

    If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

    Safe Mode

    Safe Mode with Networking

    Safe Mode with Command Prompt

    Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

    Start Windows Normally

    Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>
    well that was the whole message that showed up. none of the Safe Modes ever worked when I tried them and when I tried Last Known Good Configuration or Start Windows Normally then it would start to load then the computer restarted and went back to that same message. and I did try the F8 options thing and nothing on that list helped.

    But I fortunately had a Linux (Ubuntu) disk made a long time ago and I always used that as a Live disc to go on the internet and stuff but that was really slow and sucked. so I actually installed Ubuntu on this computer and I accidentally deleted Windows XP. I've been using it for the past 2 months and I really don't like Ubuntu at all and I really want Windows XP back. so what I want to know is if I actually have to go out and find something like a Windows Startup disk or a Windows Recovery disk. and if I do then where can I find one? but if there is an actual way to reinstall it on this computer by using Ubuntu and its internet or bring it back without going and getting that disk then please let me know =] or would it work if I borrowed someones disk?

    (and also I already tried the way where you get the Boot.ini, NTLDR, and Ntdetect.com files from another computer and put them onto a disk and stick it in this computer)

    I would really appreciate it if someone could help or at least tell me some options that I have but nothing expensive.

    How can I redownload Windows XP on my computer if I acidentally deleted it? (PLEASE HELP!!!) (involves Linux)?
    You may still have windows on your computer but by putting Ubuntu on and if it does not come up with a bootloader screen EG windows / ubuntu you will never get windows back as original.

    Find a friend who has a copy of windows

    Download %26quot; Hirens Boot CD %26quot; burn to disk and boot from it

    Virus: "Security Tool"... help!?

    Read my story about how my PC went from bad, to worse, to absolute ******* train wreck, and weep. And try to help...

    Okay, so my PC had been acting a bit weird, but mostly with Firefox. A lot of websites would time out, and I was getting pop-up ads for the first time in forever, which would open up a new window in IE disguised as Firefox (the symbol was Firefox's but it showed IE running in the processes). I downloaded Opera and tried that out for a while, but it didn't have any of those problems, so it had to be Firefox.

    I uninstalled Firefox, and told Avast to run a thorough boot scan, and I planned on reinstalling Firefox after that was done. But for reasons I can't explain, that only made things worse. When the computer restarted, and the scan finished, and viruses were supposedly fixed, the first thing I saw was a thing called %26quot;Security Tool%26quot; doing an obviously fake virus scan, and telling me I have a bunch of phony viruses on my computer, and that I need to buy their software to get rid of them. Since I've never seen or heard of %26quot;Security Tool%26quot; before, I didn't fall for it. But it wouldn't stop bothering me. On top of that, and maybe this isn't related to Security Tool, but all the icons on my desktop weren't showing, my desktop picture was gone and replaced with blue, and I couldn't open any programs! Some were temperamental, but most wouldn't open at all.

    I managed to get Avast open again, to see if it can't do another scan and remove this sonuvabitch, but I blue-screened in the middle of the scan. ****!

    I did some research on Security Tool, and to no surprise, it's a virus disguised as an antivirus. I read instruction on how to end the process, delete the registry files, etc... but all that had to be done in safe mode. I tried booting in safe mode the normal way (press F8 while booting) but it said %26quot;We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.%26quot; Every time I tried to boot into safe mode, I got that message, but it'd boot into the normal mode just fine.

    Then I read about another way I can get it to boot into safe mode, which involved Run%26gt;msconfig%26gt;boot.ini%26gt;safeboot. I tried that, and now I'm really ******. It still won't boot in safe mode, I'm still getting that same message, and to make matters worse, the same exact thing happens when I try to boot in normal mode.

    So there you have it. It started with me having some minor issues with Firefox, and it ended with my computer not even being able to get to the log-in screen. What can I do? I don't have the money for a computer guy and I don't have my OS install disc.

    If the whole world is going to conspire against me, can't it wait until I can afford to deal with this crap?
    Virus: %26quot;Security Tool%26quot;... help!?
    Really do not want to make you feel any worse but reinstalling os will not solve the problem.. This virus is a old virus with a new twist. It has the ability to rewrite itself almost as fast as you can get rid of it. The tool

    used to remove is Malwarebytes.org. But it has to be used in safe mode

    to isolate the virus. The name of the malwarebytes file has to be changed

    from mbam.exe to xxxx.exe to fool the virus. This step enables the scan to run. The error you related,windows did not....... you shoud not see that

    because windows files do not load till after you click on safe mode page.

    Make sure you are taping F8 as soon as you turn it on. Have provided links below with complete instructions on removal and the use of the tool. If you are not able to suggest replacing hard drive.

    You can try this :

    Turn on your computer power switch, keep pressing 'F8' on your keyboard, it will display a boot menu, one menu item should be like this :

    Last known good configuration

    Choose this item and press %26quot;enter%26quot;, if your Windows can come back, try to download some antispyware program. I recommend this free tool : http://www.thestubware.com/malware_remov鈥?/a>

    If your Windows still can't start, you may need to find your XP disc to make a repair installation. Check here for how to perform a repair installation : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using鈥?/a>
    I would see if you can get your OS install disks from somewhere.

    With these kind of infections, the best solution is a clean install.

    Do you have a backup? If not - make one now - and then do a format and re install everything.

    First action after re installation : Antivirus and malware protection.

    Winpatrol is usually good, and has a free and a paid version.

    Sorry that i do not have a solution - other than format - but trying tools and tricks will not solve this issue i`m afraid.
    i had this virus i tried every thing to get rid of it but you cant run any anti virus. go to this site http://www.removal-tool.org/Remove-Secur鈥?/a> . Follow the instructions it worked for me good luck man

    Replacing a hard drive ?

    I have a computer with two hard drives,1st hdd has xp installed and 2nd one has windows vista. So when ever I boot I get the option to choose xp or vista (dual boot).I removed the HDD that has the vista and I still get the dual boot menu (boo.ini) still thinks that vista is there

    i would like to change that so I do not get the menu (vista is gone DUH) How?

    is it by booting to recovery console and rebuilding boot.ini?? please help

    second question

    I have been trying to install a hard drive that I removed out of a working machine and It has xp installed in it

    when I hooked it in a new machine I get to the (boot menu)and when I select xp

    I do not go any where and the computer keeps displaying the boot menu over and over and over again

    I am pretty sure it gor some thing to do with boot ini too

    so here again

    I took a hard drive from a working machine , installed it in a new machine that does not have a hard drive (I configured the bios to boot to hdd)

    but I still get a boot menu that I used to get from the old machine?

    what do I need to do to this hard drive to get the new computer to start from that hard drive that has xp installed already ?

    sorry if this is too long

    and thank You in advance.
    Replacing a hard drive ?
    you can edit the boot.ini file to change a boot menu that you see when the system boots (use notepad to edit, you will have to go to the properties of the boot.ini and remove the %26quot;Read Only%26quot; setting)

    Ocean is correct on moving a hard drive from one system to another. I have recovered from this before when they systems are somewhat similar, but it requires a tremendous amount of driver installs for everything that is different (such as chipset drivers that aren't already loaded in the OS) but it will be a very unstable OS and will have problems (even if you can get it to run).

    To set a drive up as a slave requires a jumper setting change---you can look up the correct setting, but really it's trial and error and you have to try different combinations (ie: cable select, then primary, secondary, etc. etc) to get it not only to boot, but for the system to see both drives once it boots
    Replacing a hard drive ?
    Due to the fact that the new tower has a different configuration (motherboard, video, audio, processor etc) than the old one, the existing install of XP won't work. You're only recourse is to format that HD and reinstall windows. If you have info on that old drive you need, put it into a working PC as a second hard drive and get your files that way. You will have do a search on how to set the old HD as a slave to be able to get to it to get your files off of it.

    How can I stop my pc from giving me an option of 2 operating systems after I removed 1?

    Hi there, I have Windows xp installed on one internal HDD and I recently installed Windows 7 as well, I removed Windows 7 this week simply by wiping my 2nd HDD but the boot screen still asks me to choose either windows 7 or an earlier version of windows. How do I correct this? I have looked at my boot.ini but can't workout the right configuration to use. can someone provide a standard xp single operating system boot.ini template for me to attempt? Or do I need to change the bootcfg via cmd line? Any tips would be a big help. Thanks

    you can remove the other older windows by booting your drive
    How can I stop my pc from giving me an option of 2 operating systems after I removed 1?
    Right click on 'my computer'. Choose 'properties'.

    Select the 'advanced' tab. Click 'settings' under 'startup and recovery'.

    You can either change the 'time to display list of operating systems' to 0 or click the 'edit' button to edit boot.ini.

    If you edit boot.ini, just delete the line under [operating systems] that corresponds to the OS that is no longer installed.

    Either way, make SURE the default OS selected is the correct one.
    Formatt your system and re-install XP.

    Hard drive is messed up (Master Boot Record and Partition).

    I had a similar problem and I was able to recover all my files using Testdisk. Your current set up is right for recovery. You just need to download and install Testdisk on the working drive (Master HDD) of the other PC where you put your drive as slave.

    How to resolve this sata hdd mystery?
    Sorry Pal, but this indicates a problem with the hard drive. First thing I would do is to check the cables on your hard drive to make sure they aren't loose, and then check each part on your computer, like the cd-rom and floppy drive by removing the cables to each of them one at a time and trying to start the computer. That will tell you if it is something else like a bad cd drive or if it could for sure be the hard drive. You could also check your ram, as this has been known to cause these problems when installed wrong. Try taking each stick out of the slot. If there is, only one stick, make sure it is installed correctly. if none of these work, it may be time for a new hard drive. If you don't know how to do any of these things, you may need to seek advice from a professional. For any other help, you can email me at

    kennjame62@gmail.com.

    Hope this helps!

    Style xp not working properly...?
    I think that style xp has a restore function, ie. delete the changes that it made to BOOT.INI or the kernel. If it is not working then try to restore the computer to a few days back.

    The BOOT.INI file is always taken as backup by the computer and the restore function of XP so hopefully you will get it back!

    If the style XP software is pirated there might be malware or viruses that your antivirus didn't detect. An improper shutdownl will also make the same problem, like may be computer was in standby mode and you didn't realise and pulled the plug.

    ( to restore system : start %26gt; Help and support %26gt; under pick a task choose : undo changes to your computer with system restore )

    hope you get it right! have a nice day!

    i recently installed windows vista on partition D and then formatted D to uninstall it. i hav win XP on C partition.

    but i still get the option at start up in DOS mode asking me to choose between XP and Vista..i just dont want this option screen, i want my pc to start in XP straight away like it used to.

    and even if i choose the windows vista option it doesnt work anyway...how do i remove this option screen at start up? its annoying.

    lot of people keep saying about deleting some line in the boot.ini file so ill give you some info on that too,

    when i go to msconfig--%26gt;boot.ini, it has the following lines:

    [boot loader]

    timeout=5 %26lt;--i changed this to 5

    Here is a faster way and you will not be messing around your boot.ini

    Right Click my Computer

    Click Properties

    Click Advanced tab

    Under Startup and recovery Click Settings

    Select Windows XP as the default OS and enter %26quot;0%26quot; for the time to display list of operating systems.

    Still you can change your boot.ini but if you are not sure what to delete then it may cause you more problem.
    Boot or 'Exit' into DOS mode and delete the file boot.ini for your C boot drive completely. You don't need it and if you ever do again it will remake itself. To Exit to DOS type the word 'command' at the 'RUN' prompt in 'Programs' menu. Type cd .. and press enter until you see only the c:\ %26gt; prompt. Type del boot.ini and press enter. Type %26lt;exit%26gt; and press enter to get back into Windows. Next time you restart you should NOT have the boot menu.

    I have Windows MCE installed on my C: drive, and Windows x64 in my I: drive (have some card readers in the other letters). I need to know how to uninstall Windows MCE in the C: drive and move the x64 Windows to the C: drive without formatting. I THINK it has something to do with boot.ini but only the MCE has that, it's not in the I: drive. Can I change the I: drive letter to C: drive? I have Partition Magic, maybe that will help. Is it as simple as editing boot.ini in the C: drive and copying it to the I: drive? VERY CONFUSED!!! Please help!
    Windows dual booting?
    Make an image of the (L:) partition with a program called Norton Ghost. It takes a snapshot of your system's hard drive, or individual partition.

    You can keep the partition/format structure of your C: drive intact. When you restore the image of (L:) onto (C:) it will only copy over all the information written on the C: drive.

    Please make sure to back-up important files prior to Ghosting.

    Virus or I have misconfiged?

    When I create a file name and change it's name to autorun.inf or boot.exe, I don't see it any more in windows explorer (it disappears). But when I create a new file and try to rename it to autorun.inf or boot.exe, I receive a error message that the file I try to rename to has already existed. I have check the options to show hidden file and system file in windows explorer option but I still can't see the file I've created even thought I can see some other common hidden/system file like autoexec.bat, boot.ini, ntdetect.com, io.sys, config.sys,... in windows explorer. I use some text editor and I can open the file with name above (autorun.inf and boot.exe) by type it's name from the open file dialog (I still can't see this file). After modify it content, I run cmd and when I type command

    type autorun.inf (let's say the file I've modified is autorun.inf, the same happen to the file with the name boot.exe)

    I see the the file's content. Then I type command

    del autorun.inf

    I receive the message %26quot;Could not find autorun.inf%26quot;

    Also when I insert a CD-ROM to my drive, if the CD content the file autorun.inf, I can not see it content from windows explorer

    Does anybody know if this is a virus or I have misconfiged the autorun/autoplay policy? And how can I fix this?
    Virus or I have misconfiged?
    You can boot up your PC in safe mode command prompt.

    unhide the autorun.inf

    c:\attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf

    rename it the autorun.inf to txt

    c:\ren autorun.inf to autorun.txt

    create a FOLDER call autorun.inf to prevent re-infection

    c:\mkdir autorun.inf

    find out the virus file name

    c:\type autorun.txt

    It may show something like this

    [AutoRun]

    open=virusname.exe

    shellexecute=virusname.exe

    shell\Auto\command=virusname.exe

    unhide the virus

    c:\attrib -r -s -h virusname.exe

    remove the virus

    c:\del virusname.exe

    del the autorun.txt

    c:\del autorun.txt

    Keep the autorun.inf folder to prevent future infection

  • How to return to "normal mode" from "safe mode" in windows xp professional?

    How to return to %26quot;normal mode%26quot; from %26quot;safe mode%26quot; in windows xp professional?
    strange,, in the safe mode, go to start,run, msconfig, in the first window the original boot, put tick mark in it. apply , ok,, it will restart in normal.

    this password thing is strange, try default admin or password, one of them should work

    How do I do basic things in linux, like access my jump drive?

    I'm a noob to linux. I just installed Slaxware 11 on my computer. It is currently set up to dual boot slaxware or Windows XP. For one, I want to add a line to my BOOT.ini or my autoexec.bat file to let me load windows or linux. I need for a good guide to help start me off. I don't know how to access anything on my jump drive. My other windows partition has been mounted, but I can't change any files on it. Windows boots by default, and I have to use my slaxware install disc to boot linux. My linux partition is located at /dev/sda3 . Here is my BOOT.ini file-

    [boot loader]

    timeout=3

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti鈥?br>
    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI鈥?XP Media Center Edition%26quot; /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT=%26quot;Microsoft Windows Recovery Console%26quot; /cmdcons

    Maybe add a line something like

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)=%26quot;S鈥?11.0%26quot;

    Would it be fine to modify the autoexec.bat? It's blank right now.

    If you are a noob to GNU/Linux, I highly recommend using another distribution other than Slackware. Slack is a great distro, but not noobie friendly.

    Go with Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Mandriva, Debian, PCLinuxOS, Fedora Core, or another %26quot;mainstream consumer%26quot; distro. All the stuff you need is usually configured for you.

    Can you simply switch a hard drive with Windows 7 from one motherboard to another?

    Windows OS' prior to Vista came with a file called 'boot.ini'. I knew how to change this file to switch a HD to different motherboards, but both Win Vista and Win 7 don't come with this file.
    Can you simply switch a hard drive with Windows 7 from one motherboard to another?
    You're right but that file has nothing to do with mother board, it just locate the boot directory where pc will boot from. Your can switch it but the windows installed on the harddisk will only work with another moderboard it they both are the same otherwise, windows won't load and you'll have to reinstall it once again so that it can be configured with hardware.

    I hope this helps.

    And the A+ is still asking questions about Windows 98? REALLY? You're going to need to know 98 to be a Geek Squad ape? As if we needed yet another reason to see the A+ as the bonehead-level cert it is.

    So now every time I star computer there is alway a menu ask me to choose either enter windows setup or my oringal windows me.

    and the default one is setup.

    How can I edit boot.ini to set the winme as default one. Any real example may be great helpful.
    How to make winme the default operating system?
    The best thing that you could do, is, if you already started the switch both op systems are in the computer. Your best best is to wipe them both off, format the hard drive and just stick with ME if thats what you want. BUT if you have this computer on the internet, you might want to stick with XP because Microsoft doesnt support 98/2000/or ME. Meaning you cant get security updates and protect yourself better. They are still useable, but not protected as well. As for getting JUST the ME on the computer If I were you Id start over! Good luck!!

    hi

    go to control panel%26gt;system%26gt;advanced tab%26gt; startup and recovery and in there select your default OS and change the time to 1sec and it will not bother you again.

    The boot.ini is going to be in the root of C .. it is a hidden file.

    from command prompt you may need to change the attributes in order to edit the file:

    c: %26lt;press enter%26gt;

    cd\ %26lt;press enter%26gt;

    attrib -r -a -s -h boot.ini %26lt;press enter%26gt;

    edit boot.ini %26lt;press enter%26gt;

    * PS. I'd reconsider completing the upgrade. Windows XP is a superior operating system. Windows ME was moved to %26quot;Non supported status%26quot; in July 2006.

  • My other computer wont boot at all?

    I tried to take Linux off the dual booting system as I had uninstalled it off my pc. Now even windows wont boot up and I can't use the computer. I have Windows XP.

    This is what I did to remove Linux

    1. Right click on My computer,

    2. Go to Properties.

    3. Click on Advanced Tab.

    4. Click on Settings under Startup and recovery

    5. Click on Edit.

    6. On boot.ini file that opens, delete the line corresponding to Ubuntu.

    7. Close notepad and confirm Yes to save the changes.

    8. Restart the computer.

    What have I done wrong, and how can I now get it to boot??
    My other computer wont boot at all?
    Are you that's the bootloader?...

    If you've installed Linux after XP the it should have installed it's own bootloader, GRUB, which I think you've deleted it.

    If you say you were using the ntloader, than nothing should've gone wrong.

    Try to load the XP recovery console from the CD... browse through the commands using the help command and look for some tools to reset / fix your bootloader. I can't be more specific because I haven't had that Issue in a few years now... but that's how I fixed it back then.

    Edit: good that you add that info.

    If you have one option, it will discard the option field. This means default=multi... should be the same as in the [operating systems] entry.

    See below, if I would remove partition(2) from [operating systems] I would also have to change the default= to partition(1), exactly as the option but without =%26quot;Windows XP Professional%26quot; /fastdetect part.

    [boot loader]

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)d...k(0)partition(2)\W鈥?br>
    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI鈥?XP Professional%26quot; /fastdetect

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WI鈥?2000 Professional%26quot; /fastdetect

    Just use a WinPE or boot of the DVD Ubuntu and edit that boot.ini file properly.

    Hope this helps..
    My other computer wont boot at all?
    Safe mode an option here ?

    My trick would be a copy of Hirens Boot CD, or pop in your XP disc, and start up. Go thru the installation options until you get the %26quot;R for repair%26quot; option.

    With the same CD, you can make the linux partition ntfs/fat32 again. In future, stick to running linux from a cd instead of installing...

    Good Luck !
    You simply had windows xp? Give me a break...
    No idea about the Linux side, but you probably need to get an XP disc and boot from that; hopefully you either got one with the pc or have a version u used to install xp. U can use the same Key as before.
    Just a guess

    How can i remove a few OS's from the OS choice menu at windows boot up safely and effectivley?

    I am running XP home and i want too keep it.

    I installed windows 7 a while back, and deleted the partition it was on. But its still on the choices menu as default OS. Ive used the MS config method of changing the sequence so that MS XP Home is my default OS but it doesnt work, it still defaults the non existant windows 7.

    The first screen i see when i boot is %26quot;Windows 7%26quot; %26quot;Earlier versions of windows%26quot;

    So i highlight earlier versions and push enter.

    Then i get %26quot;Windows XP Professional Setup%26quot; (Which i also want to get rid of, and tried to do so by deleting %26quot;c:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT=%26quot;Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup%26quot; from boot.ini but it just re-appears in the file on reboot)

    And Windows XP Home.

    In MSCONFIG with windows XP HOME, you can't delete OS's from the OS choice menu, you can only move them and set the defualts, which as ive explained, doesnt work.

    Ive also tried the System%26gt;Advanced%26gt;Startup%26amp;Recovery%26gt;Edit method of editing my boot.ini file, but i didnt want to delete anything as im unfamiliar with the process and cant afford to lose the data i have on my hard drives.

    Here is my %26quot;Boot.ini%26quot; details pasted in full.
